Dr. Von Hapsburg to Run NYC Marathon

Nancy Perkey Hired

From Dr. Ann Michael, Director of Clinical Services: "I’m delighted to announce that Nancy Perkey has agreed to join us as our new Business Manager beginning Monday, October 23.  Nancy has worked at a variety of staff positions in different departments at UT.  This experience serves her well since she knows the system and the personnel at UT. She received a degree in Finance in 1997 and has worked as a business manager since 1999 and is currently a business manager with Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering. She comes with great recommendations from across the University.  Nancy is one of a very few people on campus who has experience working with the numerous types of accounts that we have in our department."

Nancy is taking over for the newly retired Shirley Hoskins. Welcome, Nancy!

Shirley Hoskins Retires

On September 28, former and current faculty and staff gathered at South Stadium Hall to bid a fond farewell to our longtime department administrative assistant and business manager, Shirley Hoskins. Shirley has retired after serving the Dept. for 33 years, She was a key member of our staff and will be missed. Best of luck, Shirley!

UTK Receives ASHA CAA Accreditation

In August, the Department received notification from the American Speech -Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) that our programs have received the Council of Academic Accreditation (CAA) accreditation through the 2013-2014 academic year.


UTK Welcomes New Faculty

The Department extends a warm welcome to new faculty members Dr. Patti Johnstone and Dr. Seunghee Ha.

Dr. Johnstone will serve as Director of Audiology. She earned her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and worked in the Binaural Hearing and Speech Lab at the Waisman Center.

Dr. Ha comes to us from the University of Illinois-Champaign. Her research area is cleft palate.

Both are beginning their work with the fall semester, 2006.


Clinical SLPs join Med Center Staff

On August 1, 2006, HSC Clinical Supervisors Melanie Davidson, Katherine Gibson, and Sandra Pemberton became UT Medical Center employees, completing the transition that began when the University divested itself of the Medical Center.

HSC Associate Director Theronne Singletary will continue in her current position and will continue to oversee clinical supervision at the Medical Center.

Former HSC audiologists Steven Doettl and Susan Lytle had previously become Med Center employees

Suzan Baker to join PLC

From Pat Webb, associate director, PLC: "I am pleased to announce that we have filled the PLC position! One of our former students, Suzan Baker, has accepted the position and will start August 7th. Suzan has been working at Oak Ridge Methodist Medical Center since she graduated from UT. During this time, she has specialized in working with pre-school children with special needs. We are excited to welcome someone with her expertise and enthusiasm to our program."

Dr. Maria Munoz to leave UT in July

From Dr. Ilsa Schwarz, ASP Department Head: "I wanted to share the news that Dr. Maria Muñoz has decided to accept a new position beginning next fall at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.  The new position provides her with a wonderful and exciting opportunity to create a new bilingual aphasia program and further develop her own skills in this important area.  While I know that every one of us wishes Maria all the best, I also know that we will miss her - personally and professionally.  Maria has made an important and lasting impact on our department. We have been fortunate to have her here to share her knowledge with us - and help us to build our own programs of excellence.  I am convinced that services to adult patients with adult neurogenic disorders in the Knoxville area are better because of the information she shared with our students and the workshops she provided professionals in the field. I also know that we are grateful to have had such a generous and collaborative colleague."


Dee Lewis Arp to leave PLC

From Pat Webb, HSC Associate Director, PLC: "After 6 incredible years,our dear friend and colleague, Dee Lewis Arp will be leaving to take another position in the area.  Dee will be part of Pilot Project for the TEIS Eligibility Team. So the good news is that many of us will get the opportunity to continue to work with her only in a different capacity.  Her official last day at PLC will be July 14th.  Please join me in thanking Dee for her exceptional work with children and families.  We wish her all the best!"


Andrea DeGennaro leaves HSC

In June, longtime HSC clinical supervisor Andrea T. DeGennaro left the Hearing and Speech Center to work with Brakebill Nursing Home in Knoxville. The HSC staff wishes Andrea all the best and thanks her for her many years of dedicated service to the students and the clinical program.

Emily Noss Earns CCC, Joins CHS Staff

From Velvet Buehler: "Emily Noss received her Master's Degree from UT in Speech Language Pathology and completed the Aural Habilitation Concentration completing over 150 clock hours working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families in CHS. Last year, she accepted a position as a CF in CHS and has just completed this. She has accepted a position in CHS as a clinical supervisor and will now provide clinical supervision, and direct clinical services to include treatment and assessments. Emily is from Knoxville and is married to Matt Noss who is from Australia. Welcome Emily!"


Bethany Gehrlein resigns

From Velvet Buehler, HSC associate director, CHS: "I wanted to let everyone know that Bethany Gehrlein has resigned and has accepted a research position in the Department of Otolaryngology at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana.  She will be leaving on May 19th, 2006.  It has been a pleasure working with Bethany. She has contributed positively to the CHS program and to graduate student education.

She will be missed! But, we wish her well in her new position learning about the research process as well as continuing to work in the area of deaf and hard of hearing children!"

Patricia Visser hired

From Shirley Hoskins: "On Monday, February 27 Ms. Patricia Visser will be joining our departmental family.  Patricia will be coming to our department from her current position at the Center for International Education and will be filling the position recently vacated by the retirement of our longtime departmental secretary, Kay Gross.

I know that I look forward to having Patricia here, working with us and I hope that each of you will join me in welcoming her to our department.  Please take a moment to stop by her office and introduce yourself when she joins us on the 27th."

Kay Gross Announces Retirement

Longtime ASP department secretary Kay Gross has announced her retirement, effective January 31, 2006. In her email to the department, Kay said, "For the last 16 years, there was a season to work and be part of this very special department - over the years, I have made many, many special friends, both faculty, staff and students. I feel i have grown because of those who have touched my life - now it's the season to enjoy time with my retired husband and our family - last month, i told Shirley and Dr. Schwarz that i would be retiring the end of January - I asked Dr. Schwarz if she would mind if I sent my own email to let all my friends know - thus ........ - I wish each of you a wonderful Christmas with your families and friends - I look forward to returning to visit and seeing all of you - I especially wish all of you students the best in your chosen professions - Shirley is working diligently to get our new secretary and I know each of you will help her/him as you helped me."

Our very best wishes to Kay as you prepare for this new season of your life- you've been such a vital part of our program, and you will be missed.
